Abstract Paintings on Paper

Paintings on Canvas

Paintings on Paper

Floral Paintings

Figure Paintings

This piece has some collage - can you see the hand holding a globe in the middle?

My unique abstract paintings on paper shown below are done on archival, acid-free, artist-quality paper.

Ah, this is a bit like discussing politics or religion. Everyone has their own heatedly defended opinion. Well, maybe not 'That' controversial.

The fact is, however, that some believe abstract paintings on canvas have more value than have more value than abstract paintings on paper. Not sure I totally agree.

As a responsible, internationally-collected artist, I only use archival, acid-free, artist-quality paper. If cared for properly, I believe original paintings on paper have as much longevity as canvas.

Reasons Why I Like to Create Abstract Paintings on Paper

Paper provides a more porous surface than canvas. Paint reacts in a totally different manner on primed canvas than on a 100% cotton print-making paper for instance, which has a wonderful toothy feel.

Paper can be glued, sewn, stapled, woven together. Also, my abstract paintings on paper can be torn down to a smaller size if the larger piece isn’t working.

I have what I kindly refer to as my hate pile of abstract paintings on paper. This consists of a stack of sketches or practice pieces and/or failed paintings that I did on paper. These make wonderful fodder for collage. I’ve used them on canvas pieces as well as in my abstract paintings on paper.

This is a tiny piece that measures a mere 3

Popular Art Papers

Artists can work on watercolor paper, printmaking paper, and illustration board, to name a few. Each of these papers comes in different surface textures and weights:

Smooth versus rough
Heavyweight versus lightweight

My favorite substrate to use for my abstracts paintings on paper are Strathmore Aquarius Watercolor Paper and Illustration Board.

Originally, only watercolor painters used paper. With the advent of new technology and manufacturing processes, new papers that withstand more rigorous treatment are now available. Definitely a windfall for artists creating unique abstract paintings on paper.

In short, I can paint as messy, gooey, and thick as I want! Collage? You bet! Abstract paintings on paper and collage are a perfect match.

The Care and Feeding of Abstract Paintings on Paper

I’ve seen some amazingly unique wall art done with delicate Rice Papers. Obviously, a free-hanging rubbing done on delicate Rice Paper has different display needs than a painting done on 300 pound watercolor paper that has been nailed to a wood substrate.

I have quite a collection of figurative abstract paintings on paper. Please click here to view the entire collection.

Private Collection

The piece shown here is the first of twenty-one paintings in my Emissary Series.

Nebulous.jpg (106702 bytes)
Nebulous
$450

This painting is a study in neutrals and has a bit of newspaper collage in the center - can you see the hand? I find this to be one of my strongest pieces - the shapes are bold, the colors rich and suggestive. This is one of my threshold pieces - one where I felt that I made an artistic breakthrough.
Measures 30" x 22"

Sacred Space II
Collection The Artist
$450

One of the first paintings where I incorporated black. The colors in this were difficult to capture, it is actually softer shades of cream and pink with rich darks.

Tapestry.jpg (98365 bytes)
Tapestry
$300

What an enjoyable experience to create this woven collage. Using bright colors along with rich neutral areas, the weaving really shines. It is meant to be floated on a background mat when framed. I have it on a neutral gray mat with a burnished frame.
Measures 22" wide x 30" tall, not counting collage pieces that extend beyond the surface.

The Stage is Set.jpg (100698 bytes)
The Stage is Set
$350

I love the line work in this painting. The feeling I get is of being in an ornate theatre, waiting for the performance to start.
Measures approximately 34" x 22"

It's Party Time.jpg (97071 bytes)
It's Party Time

This piece has all my favorite bright, warm colors. My idea was to celebrate the joy of summer.
Measures approximately 34" x 22".

I created this cut and woven piece shortly after 9/11. A fractured surface with missing sections ... the bright colors suggest hope, a new beginning
Measures approximately 15" wide x 22" tall.

Deep Space 5.jpg (91640 bytes)
Deep Space 5
$350

A very different piece for me, it's one of my husband's favorites. With all the angles, illusions of compartments and numbers, I am reminded of a lunar capsule floating in space.
22" wide x 30" tall.

Bird.jpg (30036 bytes)
Warrior Princess
$250

A strong, wise, hopeful Warrior.
20" wide x 30" tall.

Doorway_1.jpg (39929 bytes)
Doorway I
$350

Exploration of the figure led me through the creative expression of the recognized physical form to depicting the figure as a vessel or container to examining the idea of figure as a doorway.

... exposing?
... revealing?
... moving into the unknown?

Each piece measures 22" x 30"

These two paintings preceded the Doorway pieces above as part of my figurative series.

Vessel I is painted with layers of transparent fluid acrylics and has rice paper collage on the lower section. It measures 22" x 30"

Vessel II is on illustration board, measures 20" x 30", and also has collage papers embedded in the layers of paint.

This piece reminds me of sailing. Lots of line work and drawing into the wet paint.
Measures 30" x 22"

For this piece I cut and tore the paper into the shield shape, then added wire and beads. Piece comes framed as shown (the background mat is actually a metallic gold).

Click on the image to enlarge so you can see the texture and colored pencil work. This was great fun to create. The colored pencils make a wonderful added texture to the paint.
Measures 30" x 22"

Phil's Place

Inspiration can come from the most unlikely places. After a day-long photo shoot at what I can only describe as a pack-rat's heaven, I have enough material for years of painting! The reference for this particular piece, called Phil's Place, was the rear end of a semi-trailer.

From the same treasure trove of potential painting ideas came this piece. It is actually the back end of a pink dump truck - Yup, pink. Measures 30" x 22"

Acrylic gel was spread onto illustration board and printed into with various tools. I first painted with fluid acrylics, then added layers of opaque color and colored pencil. A final wash of opalescent gold settled into the textured areas. This piece was an experimentation using texture to create areas of great interest. The size is 15" x 20"
